Welcome Walkers went for an excellent walk organised by Wendy to the Toposcope above Lingen. This was followed by a trip to Aarvark books and lunch in their cafe. The weather was kind to us. Debbie introduced Desna McAll, our speaker for the evening. She gave a thoughtful and at times very amusing talk about Dogs For Good, a charity that relies on donations to further their work providing advice and support and specifically trained dogs for people with disabilities, to enable them to lead more independent lives at home and in the community.
We were amazed at the varied activities the dogs are trained to help with and all dog owners present had a wry smile imagining their own pets trying to accomplish some of them! www.dogsforgood.org We finished the evening with our usual bring and share supper and invited Desna to join us. During our supper Debbie made a presentation of orchids to Claire Brown our outgoing Treasurer and Annette for organising the programme, to show our appreciation of their hard work over the last two years. Debbie welcomed 15 members and our speaker for the evening Will Sneddon to our March
annual meeting. Will requested to speak before our business meeting and he gave a very informative talk on cyber security, which we all apreciated and I think we will repeat in the future as it really was very helpful to us all and we all went home to change our passwords! On Saturday 2 March Staunton on Arrow WI hosted the village coffee spot. A magnificent joint effort on cake making, hostessing, washing up and generally making the Coffee Spot a really enjoyable community event. Made £159.60 to keep the hall running, and £67 on the draw for WI funds.
Debbie Stokes instructed us in the art of folding pages of old books to create a cute hedgehog for keeping notes and cards in. Some of the books were snaffled by avid readers before we started and Becky arrived just in time to judge best shape, nose and face. We finished the evening with a jolly bring and share supper.
Debbie Stokes handed over to Becky and her husband Mark who gave us a very interesting demonstration on how to make Sushi. They have been fans of these Japanese dishes for many years and regularly have family meals. It was lovely to watch Becky construct the rolls of vinegared rice with a range of ingredients including peppers, cucumber, avocado and smoked salmon all wrapped in nori seaweed. We were then invited to try the samples and some brave souls even tried the wasabi! The pickled ginger was a popular garnish for many of us. Mark then did a brilliant quiz on all the information we had learned throughout the demonstration
and we finished the evening with our bring and share supper, although we were all quite full by then! We had a short introduction from Wendy Hughes about how she got started in felting, her fabulous creations were all around on display for us to admire, before we all got stuck into felting our robins. Wendy had given us all a super kit that had everything we needed to get started. We decided an hours concentration was enough for one evening and so we finished at 9pm for our sociable bring and share supper.
Sarah Westaby introduced her friend Sarah Williams, a local yoga teacher who led us all in a session of chair yoga. We concentrated on breathing, posture, balance and stretching in various yoga poses, all from the comfort of our chairs. We certainly all felt the benefits, so much so that we hope to repeat the sessions somehow in the future, possibly as a community activity.
We then finished the evening with our usual sociable bring and share supper. The WI arranged and hosted the village Harvest supper in the hall. Nearly 50 members and villagers were present to enjoy cold meats, jacket potatoes and salads and a selection of scrumptious puddings. There was a competition to identify the WI babies, plus a game of stand up bingo. The evening was a great success and a donation will be made to the Kington Food Bank.
At our October meeting we all had a good time playing indoor Kurling; we were able to borrow the equipment from Powys Radnor Federation.
